I originally joined ASM while in college to boost my resume in anticipation of the job hunt. Similarly, I became vice president of the student chapter to add a little padding. After graduation, I admittedly stayed with ASM primarily due to the free 1-year membership. Luckily I met other active ASM members at my company who urged me to get involved again as a professional member. I took a few of the ASM educational courses, and even taught a summarized version to engineers and technicians at my company. I became involved with the local chapter’s Materials Camp for high school students and also attended conferences sponsored by ASM and affiliate societies. The networking potential at these conferences and other ASM events has provided me with many opportunities to enhance my career, including positions on the Advanced Materials & Processes Editorial Committee and the International Metallographic Society Board of Directors. The Emerging Professionals Program has allowed me to interact with other young, driven individuals who have similar interests and goals. This group provides a new perspective for ASM, and we are getting recognized for our unique ideas. Getting involved at the national level is very rewarding, and the Emerging Professionals Program has opened the doors to a great experience.
