Benefits
|
- Networking
Get involved in your student chapter to meet other engineering students and professionals. It's a great way to make new friends and start forming a network of contacts that can help you throughout your career.
- Financial Support
Every year, active student chapters get a check from ASM in the form of a 25 percent rebate on all dues paid by the chapter's active members. This rebate enables chapters to get involved in more activities and develop stronger technical programs.
- Leadership Development
As you work through the various levels of chapter management, you gain valuable leadership skills that will help you throughout your career, as a team member, as a professional manager and as a leader of ASM.
- ASM Updates
Being involved in a student chapter means staying up to date on society activities, including scholarships, conferences, workshops, publications and contests.
- Awards and Recognition
Chapters can achieve special recognition through two annual programs: Chapters of Excellence Awards and the Membership Challenge.
- Perks for Faculty Advisors
Faculty Advisors receive the ASM Chapter Network newsletter and a free year of membership in ASM (if the chapter submits its annual report before the deadline).

Activities
|
When you’re active in a ASM or Material Advantage student chapter, you gain access to activities that can help you launch a successful career, whether you’re pursuing metallurgy, materials science and engineering, or a related engineering or scientific field. Here are a few examples:
Technical Meetings
Hear a technical presentation by a leading local or national expert. After the presentation, stick around to meet and talk to the presenter and other ASM members.
Plant Tours
See firsthand how companies put technology to work during guided tours of their facilities. Plant tours enable you to learn more about a particular material or process from the people who work with it every day.
Special Events
Meet and network with other members of your chapter (as well as other societies) at special events. Popular chapter events are Awards Night, which recognizes individual accomplishments; Guest Night, a social meeting to recruit new members and meet new contacts; and Career Night, held for high school students to introduce them to careers in the materials industry.
Joint Meetings
By communicating frequently with your local ASM chapter, technical meetings and educational seminars can be jointly sponsored by both chapters. This is an ideal opportunity for you to meet and network with materials professionals who can help you find your way in the local job market.

Requirements
|
To receive membership rebates and be eligible to compete in chapter contests, your student chapter must maintain its active status by meeting the following requirements. (Each chapter is reviewed in the summer after receipt of its annual report and prior to the start of the next academic year.)
Requirements for Active Status
- Holds a ASM or Material Advantage Student Chapter Charter
- Has a faculty advisor who is currently an ASM member
- Annually elects chapter officers
- Submits an annual report to ASM no later than June 1 of the current chapter year
- Has a minimum of 10 student members in the chapter as of the annual report OR has submitted acknowledgment that the chapter is otherwise active
If a chapter does not meet these requirements, it is considered dormant for one year. Appropriate actions, including submitting an annual report the following year, must be taken by the chapter to regain active status. Dormant chapters are not eligible for membership rebates or competition in chapter contests; however, the chapter will continue to receive all regular chapter mailings.
A chapter that does not meet the requirements after one year is considered inactive. Once inactive, the student chapter faculty advisor or department chair must:
- Submit a written request to the Student Chapter Program Office to reactivate the chapter charter
- Submit a copy of the chapter bylaws
- Have a minimum of 15 student member signatures
- Have a Chapter Officers Listing
