 Student Board Member Program

We're looking for three Material Advantage members to provide insights and ideas to the ASM Board!

Why?

You’re the future of our Society! ASM values the input and participation of student members at all levels of activity. Participation already exists at the strategic planning level and the ASM Board wants more of what you have to say and contribute.

An Opportunity Like No Other!!

  • Meet and work with some of the leading professionals in the materials science and engineering profession and ASM International.
  • Represent the Material Advantage membership and speak on behalf of the students in the program.
  • Attend three regularly scheduled ASM Board meetings (June 2008, October 2008 during MS&T, and Winter 2009), with expenses for travel, hotels and meals paid for by ASM International.
  • You’ll take an active role in shaping the future of ASM as an active participant in our Strategic Planning Meeting (expenses paid).
  • Learn leadership skills that will benefit you throughout your career.
  • Add a unique experience (and a competitive advantage) to your resume.

Sound good? Here’s what you need to do:

  • To be eligible, you must be a Material Advantage student member, undergraduate or graduate, during the 2008-2009 academic year.
  • To apply, submit an application package consisting of:

    1. A current resume
    2. A two-page essay (typed and double-spaced) addressing your interest in participating in the program. Please address the following points:
      • What experiences led to your interest in this program?
      • What qualities, characteristics and skills do you possess that will make you a strong candidate to serve as Material Advantage Representative to the ASM Board
      • What do you hope to learn/gain from this program?
      • 2-3 letters of recommendation from faculty

Nominations are due no later than April 1, 2008.

Dr. Frederick J. Lisy, FASMThree selected participants will be notified by May 2008 and will each begin their non-renewable and non-voting, one-year term as Material Advantage Representatives to the ASM Board of Trustees, at the Strategic Planning meeting.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for leadership training, which is not something that can be taught in a classroom. Leadership has to be observed, experienced and learned. It is also a unique, first-hand way to experience how a Board of Trustees functions and makes decisions .”

    Dr. Frederick J. Lisy, FASM
President, Orbital Research Incorporated, Past Trustee of ASM International (2004-2007)

"Being a student member of the ASM International Board of Trustees exposed me to the business side of the society and allowed me to be involved in and contribute ideas to planning and decision making that will shape the future of our society. I learned that there are many different ways to be involved in ASM and the experience has motivated me to be a lifelong volunteer. Lastly, I met professionals in all stages of professional development who provided me with valuable insight and advice about planning my own career."  ~Leigh Duren, Worcester Polytechnic Institute
"Student members of the ASM Board of Trustees get the benefits of participating first hand in the governance of ASM. This is an outstanding opportunity to learn, network and make a significant impact on the future of your society." ~Brady Butler, University of Utah
"Being a student member on the board has given me much to look forward in my future career.  To see how the board interacted with each other to improve the materials community was encouraging. The professionals working on and for the board were a constant source of information and encouragement for the future. My experience with these people will always be valued highly and will never be forgotten." ~Megan Reynolds, Washington State University
