Train in our $1.8 million Materials Lab

At the training center at Materials Park, course participants can practice new skills and strengthen existing capabilities on more than $1.8 million in materials lab equipment.

At ASM's training center you can induction harden a piece of bar stock; section, mount, and polish it; and, capture an image of the microstructure. After performing a series of mechanical property tests, you can go back and anneal the same material in a box furnace, capture a second microstructure, and run a second set of mechanical property tests. Using a high-resolution projector, the two images can be projected side-by-side, showing the materials microstructural response to the heat treatments. The result: A real-world, hands-on demonstration of the relationship between thermal processing, microstructure, and mechanical properties.

But that's only part of the picture. The advanced multimedia capabilities of the new training center promote "dynamic learning"--training that more interactive and more effective.

Instead of clustering around a single desktop monitor, you can watch a high-resolution microstructure projected on a six-foot-square screen. Instead of looking at generic samples of a particular failure mechanism, you're encouraged to provide samples that become the subject of live, in-class testing, analysis, and problem solving. A total of 9 desktop personal computers provide hands-on exposure to the latest technical and analytical software.

By bringing actual problems to class and working on the solutions, you'll go back to work with more than "training" or "education" -- you'll go back with answers that can be applied immediately.
