ASM Society Opportunities - Shape the future of ASM policies and procedures
 ASM society committees and councils are the governance groups who serve as the infrastructure that captures key directional shifts in member needs and translates these needs into action items for potential development. They are support committees who provide the ASM Board of Trustees with information, input and recommendations in order to:
- Establish effective policies
- Set meaningful budgets
- Oversee society operations
As the eyes and ears of the Board, society committees and councils are invaluable in finding ways to improve ASM’s effectiveness in serving members and customers. This is accomplished by improving policies and programs and by developing new strategies and products. We invite you to explore all of the volunteer opportunities at the Society level.
ASM recommends appointments to the Society's Committees/Councils each Spring. The following list provides the name of a staff liaison (whom you can contact) as well as the purpose of each committee. Committee Purpose
The purpose of Acta Materialia, Incorporated shall be to publish high-quality, peer refereed, journals in the area of materials science and engineering. To that effect, the Corporation may also support or promote scientific meetings, award prizes, and undertake other activities to further its fundamental purpose. That purpose is to increase and diffuse the knowledge of science and engineering of materials." This is from their By-Laws.
Committee Purpose
To facilitate awareness and understanding of materials science and engineering by encouraging and assisting students and faculty leaders. Recommend students and faculty to receive scholarships and awards under the ASM Materials Education Foundation Programs. Committee appointments to be recommended through liaison with the ASM Materials Education Foundation. Assist the ASM Materials Education Foundation in the development activities which promote public education and interests in the materials science and engineering professions. The Action in Education Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
The Advisory Technical Awareness Council will advise and alert the Board of Trustees and ASM membership by: identifying global trends and developments in materials, including technology, commerce, government, societal perceptions, and education; assessing for the society the impact of these trends on the welfare of ASM membership; and recommending the initiation of projects and tasks addressing the above. The Advisory Technical Awareness Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
The purpose of the AM&P Editorial Committee is to advise the editors in selecting article topics of greatest interest to ASM members, and to suggest authors and sources of information for the magazine. The AM&P Editorial Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
The Alloy Phase Diagram Committee oversees and guides ASM's involvement in alloy phase diagram data activities. It is responsible for monitoring the scopes of ASM and International Programs and ASM's input into those scopes, for monitoring the technical standards of ASM's products from these programs, for liaison with other alloy phase diagram committees, such as the International Commission on Alloy Phase Diagram Data. The Committee establishes policy related to the editorial content and scope of the Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion, recommends approaches to serve and expand the subscriber and author base, and maintains continual surveillance of the technical quality of the publication. The Alloy Phase Diagram Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
The Joint Commission makes policy decisions with respect to the editorial content of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions, referring recommendations to the Boards of the respective Societies as may be appropriate. It determines methods for selection of articles for publication in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions, maintains continual surveillance of the editorial and technical quality of the publication, as well as a high level of currentness.
Committee Purpose
The Awards Policy Committee shall recommend to the Board the awards policy of the Society, and shall be responsible for the awards activity of the Society. It shall recommend to the Board suitably chosen and properly qualified nominees for the various awards and honors of the Society. The Awards Policy Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
The Canada Council is to serve the particular interests of the Canada Chapters, without conflict with the interests of the Society as a whole, through the provisions of effective means of inter-communications, organization of Canadian regional meetings, and by assistance with the technical programming plans of the Canada Chapters. The Canada Council shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
The Chapter Council is responsible for chapter policy and governance issues. The Council shall review the quality level of chapters, act as primary liaison between the chapters and Materials Park and review funding proposals related to these activities. The Chapter Council shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
The purpose of the Education Committee and its Subcommittees is to develop a true "Lifelong Learning" capability, meeting the education needs of members, prospective members, and the general materials community from elementary school through retirement. ASM must attract and retain students and the new members worldwide who are the key to emerging markets and technologies. At the same time, we must position ourselves to serve the needs of, and add value for, new generations of engineers and scientists and also continue to provide educational opportunities and support for our worldwide professional membership. The Education Committee shall assist in providing focus and understanding to the Lifelong Learning and Education Department. The Committee shall, through its sub-committees and in coordination and cooperation with ASM Affiliate Societies, other ASM committees, the ASM Materials Education Foundation, and other organizations, identify, assess, and define material community needs and markets to be served through education and training activities, particularly those highlighted in the ASM Strategic Plan. Where appropriate, programs will be developed to meet these needs and markets.

The mission of the Events Council is to serve as a single point of coordination for all programming activities within ASM International. The Events Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.

The purpose of the Federal Affairs Committee is to inform members of issues and opportunities arising from government activities; provide forums for exchange of information among government materials interests and the private sector; and provide a resource for expert materials technical input into government issues. The Federal Affairs Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.

The mission of the Programming Board is to bring together the generators and users of information to meet the needs of ASM members and the materials community by providing technical resources for programming, primarily at Materials Solutions and MS&T. The Programming Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.

The Finance Committee shall supervise the financial affairs of the Society under the direction of and with the approval of the Board. It shall review the financial plan of the Society and recommend it to the Board for Action; review the annual report of the Treasurer; supervise accounting procedures of the Society; and select an independent certified public accountant to audit the financial accounts. The Treasurer shall be Chairman of the committee. The Finance Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.

The ASM Handbook Committee represents the interests of the ASM Membership and other handbook users with regard to the several series of Handbooks published by ASM International. The Committee ensures that ASM Handbooks are current, accurate, complete, and easy to use. The Committee provides technical as well as administrative recommendations to the Editorial Staff regarding appropriate topics for Handbooks, the need for revision of current volumes, and the needs and interests of the diverse materials community. The Committee also provides broad policy guidance pertaining to the planning, organizing, editing, publication, and marketing of ASM Handbooks. The Handbook Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
To foster an Indian identity within ASM and to serve the particular interests of the Indian members of ASM without conflict with the international position of ASM. The India Council shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.

The Investment Committee shall supervise the investment portfolio and the real estate holdings for the Society. It shall make recommendations to the Board with respect to investment policy and acquisitions, dispositions, utilization and development of real property. It shall carry out the investment objectives fixed by the Society and optimize real property of the Society as an investment. It shall submit reports of its activities to both the Finance Committee and the Board. The Investment Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.

The Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance Editorial Committee shall identify trends in the application of the principles of materials science to designing engineered systems and testing of materials performance. The committee shall also maintain continual surveillance of the publication for technical quality, current relevance, and fulfillment of stated scope. It shall also recommend changes to better meet subscriber needs. The Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
To advance information sharing, networking and training related to materials and processes for medical devices.
Committee Purpose
The ASM Materials Properties Database Committee 1.) Assesses the need for materials property information such as alloy designations, compositions, physical and mechanical property information; 2.) Oversees the development of data publications; 3.) Fosters the development of an integrated system for storage and retrieval of material property data for media independent delivery; and 4) Encourages and assists in the distribution of material property information to the engineering community. The Materials Properties Database Committee shall work in collaboration with the Web, and New Products & Services Committees, and with other appropriate committees to support the ASM Strategic Plan, and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee.

The Membership Development Committee is to evaluate the membership implications of the Board of Trustees strategic objectives and develop a membership strategy in response to those objectives. The Committee also is to develop and implement key tactics to accomplish the strategy. The Membership Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.

The New Products and Services Committee provides input and coordination of expanded products and services in new technical areas and new markets to current and potential individual members and corporate customers.

The ASM Student Affairs Committee shall work with the Material Advantage Committee (consisting of members of ACerS, AIST, ASM, TMS), the ASM Membership Committee, the ASM Chapter Council and the Material Advantage student members to support ASM's strategic objective for Life Long Learning and Education. The committee will be responsible for identifying the needs of student members relative to ASM and Material Advantage, and suggesting and coordinating activities that will recrit and retain student members. The Committee is also charged with the communication, coordination and implementation of the key tactics and strategies of the ASM Board of Trustee's Strategic Plan and in regards to student membership and chapter growth, as well as retaining and converting student members upon graduation. The ASM Student Affairs Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
The Technical Books Committee shall foster the development of excellence in ASM books by identifying worthwhile technical areas, suggesting subjects and authors, and recommending improvements in the published works. The Technical Books Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.
Committee Purpose
To approve and champion ASM's web strategy and development. To act as a sounding board in reviewing potential key features and criteria that ASM needs to incorporate into its website and online products and services. To provide a perspective on issues facing the membership and marketplace, and assure that there are processes in place for: -the involvement of customers -adding and expanding ASM's content and managing intellectual property.
