Start a New Chapter

To form a new professional chapter, the following criteria must be met:
- A petition must be signed by 35 ASM members in good standing who are interested in forming a chapter, and agree to remain members of the Society and to support the chapter for a minimum period of two years after its formation.
- The group must submit a statement outlining "What needs the chapter will serve" and a plan which shows how they plan to meet those needs for the upcoming year.
- The area must not already be served by another chapter within 75 miles OR that chapter must be willing to release that area upon chartering.
- There must be a Leadership Team (Executive Committee) with at least four members who are willing to serve and take the petition through the two-year charter process.
- The group must create a set of bylaws that are in line with ASM International’s Constitution and Rules of Government).
Once the above criteria is met, the group will be considered an "ASM Club" for a probationary period of two years. During this period the chapter’s petition will be assigned to a representative from the ASM Chapter Council. This representative will liaison with the group along with ASM staff and will ultimately make the recommendation to the Council on the viability of the chapter. The chapter’s viability will be determined based on the following list of guidelines, which history has demonstrated to be indicators for long term success:
- The group must continue to meet the above criteria AND
- Submit an annual report at the end of each chapter year
- Have a representative attend the ASM Leadership Days program during the two (2) year probationary period.
- Show that a critical mass of at least 100 ASM members in good standing exists that work or live within a 75-mile radius of the proposed chapter.
- Show that there is a strong employment base in the area. Several viable employers need to be represented by local members (industrial, government and/or academic).
- Hold monthly "Club" meetings during the year (between five to nine annually) with a minimum average attendance of 20 members or 10 percent of the membership.
- Hold monthly Leadership Team meetings (six to 12 annually) with minutes submitted to Materials Park.

Chapter Council reviews all chapter petitions using these guidelines and makes their recommendation to the ASM Board of Trustees based on their belief that the chapter could sustain itself over the long term.
