Medical Device Resources
|
To fill the knowledge gap between the innovators who design medical devices and the engineers who best understand materials and their capabilities, ASM International launched its Materials & Processes for Medical Devices (MPMD) initiative in 2003.
The growing need for reliable materials information by the medical devices community has resulted in a growing number of new MPMD events and services, including the Materials for Medical Devices Database, seminars, the MPMD Conference & Exposition, MPMD books and publications, the MPMD Quarterly Magazine, and our monthly MPMD eNews.
Also of interest to the medical devices community: An Affiliate Society of ASM International, the International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies (SMST) is dedicated to disseminating technical information and education related to shape memory and superelastic materials – particularly Nitinol alloys.

The database provides designers of medical devices with a comprehensive and authoritative source of mechanical, physical, biological response and drug compatibility properties for the materials and coatings used in cardiovascular devices. |
|
The database draws references from nearly 3,000 sources including journal articles, conference proceedings, manufacturer data, USFDA CDRH 510K submissions, PMAs, SSEDs and FDA standards and guidance documents. These references provide designers with the information they need on many generic materials, coatings, drugs, device manufacturers and hundreds of manufacturer’s specific grades and products.
- Save time and money by eliminating unnecessary exploratory screening and testing.
- Identify materials that optimally satisfy mechanical design requirements.
- Select candidate materials based on mechanical properties and compatibility with blood.
- Determine materials used in existing devices.
- Identify approved devices that use a specific material.
- Screen materials based on their biocompatibility.
- Select a combination of compatible material, drug and coating.
- Access and print SSED device documentation.
- Export mechanical properties to FEA applications.
- Create reports that compare materials, coatings and processes per user-defined criteria.
Revolutionary Software Tools
- Export materials properties to standard FEA design packages
- Screen materials by sets of multiple materials properties
- Create custom graphs and charts
- Aggregate materials data by application – knees, hips, spines, valves, stents, pacemakers, etc.
Relevant Information and Data
The database includes materials properties, mechanical properties, what materials are used in each device, biocompability response data, compatible drugs and coatings used in devices, and surface treatment methods.
Comprehensive References
Datasheets and literature references for 9,000 devices; 215 materials and 634 specific material grades and their manufacturers. The journal articles referenced are key to all designers’ research. They include: Biomaterials, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, Polymer Degradation and Stability, Applied Surface Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Circulation and many others.
Authoritative and Peer Reviewed
Comprehensive reviews of the literature concerning biocompatibility of candidate materials and coatings, peer-reviewed by 75 industry experts.

MPMD Conference & Exposition
|
|
Plan today for MPMD 2011. The Materials and Processes for Medical Devices Conference and Exposition will be held Aug. 8-10 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Held every 24 months, the MPMD event focuses on new advances and innovations in the science, technology and application of medical device materials and manufacturing.
MPMD participants include experts from academia, industry, and national laboratories involved in cardiac, vascular, neurological and GI implants, orthopaedic implants, dental devices and surgical instrumentation and devices.
The MPMD Technical Program includes biomedical alloys (including stainless steels, Ti alloys, Co-Cr alloys, Ni-Ti alloys, noble and refractory metals), biopolymers, bioceramics, surface coatings, and nanomaterials.
The MPMD Exposition provides the market with a show that complements the unique, focused nature of the conference. Participants have a unique opportunity to network with some of the most respected professionals in the industry. In addition, an exclusive exposition luncheon and networking reception promote interaction among participants and exhibitors.
For information on exhibiting and sponsorship packages, please contact Kelly Thomas, National Account Manager, kelly.thomas@asminternational.org or 440.338.1733.
